How to Choose a Moroccan Kaftan for a Wedding (Bride or Guest)

Start with your role. As a bride, you are planning a sequence of looks, often including a white or ivory takchita for one key moment; as a guest, you want a kaftan in a rich colour that feels festive without competing with the bride. From there, choose a fabric that suits the season, check your size against the garment measurements and order well ahead so there is time for adjustments.

Bride or guest: two different briefs

If you are the bride

A traditional Moroccan wedding often involves several changes of outfit over the celebration, frequently guided by a negafa, the woman who dresses and accompanies the bride. Rather than looking for one perfect dress, think of your looks as a sequence: perhaps a white or ivory takchita for one moment, a colour linked to your family's region for another, and something lighter for the later hours of dancing.

For the most formal moments, a takchita (an underdress layered with an overlayer, cinched with a belt) gives you volume and presence. For the looks you will wear longest, a single-piece kaftan is lighter and easier to move in.

If you are a guest

Guests usually choose a kaftan, or a lighter takchita if they are close family. A few points of etiquette are worth keeping in mind:

  • Many guests avoid all-white so the bride's white look stays her own.
  • If the family has chosen a colour theme, ask before you buy.
  • Elegant beats elaborate: a well-cut kaftan with beautiful finishing will always look right.

Henna night or the ceremony?

The henna night is usually more intimate and relaxed than the main celebration. Green is a popular choice for many brides on this night, often paired with gold accents. On a practical note, henna can stain fabric, so consider deeper colours and sleeves that stay clear of your hands while the henna is applied and drying.

The ceremony itself is the most formal occasion, and the place for your most elaborate piece, whether that is an embroidered takchita for the bride or a structured kaftan for a close relative.

Choosing the colour

White and ivory are timeless for brides. Look at the details that give white its depth: sfifa trim, hand embroidery, beadwork or crystals. Our white kaftans include pieces such as Celestia White and Rimas White.

Jewel tones are the classic choice for guests and for the bride's coloured looks: emerald and olive green, royal blue, burgundy and deep plum all photograph beautifully under evening light. Shailene Olive, in drap de soie, is a good example of a rich colour that feels festive without being loud.

Fabrics by season

  • Autumn and winter: velvet and brocade feel warm and look luxurious; drap de soie has a lovely weight.
  • Spring and summer: crepe, chiffon, organza, tulle and silk are lighter and breathe better for long evenings.
  • All year: satin works in most seasons, especially for indoor venues.

Embellished fabrics need care after the event. We recommend professional dry cleaning; always check the care label first.

Fit and length

Use our size guide before ordering. The measurements are of the kaftan, not your body, and the underarm-to-underarm width is the main reference. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger: the hips are designed with ease and the belt adjusts the fit at the waist.

Choose your shoes before you order, because the length should be judged with the heel you will actually wear. Length adjustments are complimentary: just add your request in the order notes.

Timing: order ahead

Wedding season is busy, and many of our pieces are one of a kind, so once you find the right one it is better not to wait. We ship worldwide by express carrier from our atelier in Tangier, but give yourself a comfortable margin before the date: time to receive the piece, try it with your shoes and jewellery, and arrange any small local alterations if needed. If your date is close, contact our team before ordering.

Accessories that finish the look

  • Belt: most of our kaftans and takchitas come with a matching belt; a metal or embroidered belt can change the mood of the same piece.
  • Jewellery: balance it with the embroidery. Heavily worked fabric calls for simpler jewellery; a plain crepe kaftan can carry statement earrings or a headpiece.
  • Veil: a light veil adds softness, especially for brides and for the ceremony.

You will find belts, jewellery and veils in our Jewellery & Accessories collection.

Whether you are planning a bride's sequence of looks or one beautiful outfit as a guest, the right piece is the one that suits the moment and lets you enjoy the night.
