The Moroccan Caftan: Heritage and Craftsmanship at Kaftan Elegance

The Moroccan caftan is one of the great garments of North Africa: a long, flowing robe whose beauty lies in its fabric and, above all, in the handwork that finishes it. At Kaftan Elegance, our pieces are made in our atelier in Tangier, where artisans keep those techniques alive while giving them a contemporary line.

A garment with a long history

The caftan has been worn in Morocco for centuries. It is closely associated with the country's historic cities, such as Fez, Tetouan, Rabat and Marrakech, where it became a garment of ceremony and celebration. Historians often point to a mix of influences in its development, including Andalusian and Ottoman traditions, which Moroccan craftspeople absorbed and made their own.

Over time the caftan evolved from formal court and city dress into the piece Moroccan women choose for the most important moments of their lives: weddings, henna nights, Eid and family celebrations. Alongside it developed the takchita, a two-layer outfit made of a tahtiya underdress and a dfina overlayer, usually cinched with a belt. Today both are worn across Morocco and by Moroccan families around the world, and each generation reinterprets them in new colours, fabrics and silhouettes.

The craft behind a Moroccan caftan

What distinguishes a fine caftan is not only its cut, but the hours of handwork in its finishing. A few of the techniques you will find in our pieces:

Sfifa

Sfifa is a braided trim, traditionally made from silk or metallic thread, that is applied along the neckline, the front opening and the cuffs. It frames the garment and gives it its characteristic structure. Laying it evenly along curves takes a trained hand and patience.

Aakad

Aakad are small knotted buttons, often made from the same thread as the sfifa, that run down the front of the caftan. They can number in the dozens on a single piece, and each one is formed by hand. Together, sfifa and aakad are among the most recognisable signatures of Moroccan tailoring.

Hand embroidery

Embroidery brings the caftan to life, from fine thread work to richer gold motifs on velvet or drap de soie. Different regions and workshops have their own styles, and a single embroidered panel can take many hours to complete.

Beadwork, crystals and sequins

For evening and wedding pieces, beadwork, crystals and sequins add light and movement. This includes Mozouna sequin embroidery, where sequins are worked into patterns that catch the light as you move. Placing them by hand allows a balance that machines rarely achieve: enough sparkle for a celebration, without overwhelming the fabric.

The story of Kaftan Elegance

Kaftan Elegance was founded by Ikram Karrich El Harrak, who brings more than a decade of experience in fashion to every collection. The brand began as a boutique in Barcelona. Later, Kaftan Elegance also operated a boutique in Brussels for two years.

The heart of the brand is its atelier in Tangier, Morocco. There, a team of more than fifteen skilled artisans and professionals cuts, sews and finishes each piece, combining the traditional techniques described above with fabrics such as crepe, drap de soie, satin, velvet, organza, chiffon, brocade and lace. Most kaftans and takchitas come with a matching belt, designed as part of the look.

One-of-a-kind pieces

Many of our designs are made as single pieces. When a caftan is one-of-a-kind, it will not be reproduced in the same form, which makes it especially meaningful for a wedding or a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Pieces such as Laleh and the Exclusive Takchita Adila belong to this category.

Our Exclusive Collection gathers the pieces where the atelier's craftsmanship is most visible: richer embroidery, more elaborate finishing and carefully chosen fabrics, such as the Exclusive Lebsa Munia in drap de soie.
